///ABOUT ACHR///

For your pleasure here is the first ever animated crosshair for Quake2
(and ofcourse Action Quake!) Courtesy of non other than Weird 1
Now your crosshair will animate when firing!

///INSTALLATION///

A mouthful, but it's really simple:

1) Copy the following alias lines AT THE END of your Autoexec.cfg (under quake2/action/ - if yer playing action quake2, if not /baseq2 or /ctf or whatever you play)

//crosshair alias
crosshair 1
alias ani1 "wait; wait; crosshair 2; wait; wait; crosshair 3"
alias +smart_attack "+attack; wait; ani1"
alias -smart_attack "-attack; crosshair 1"
bind mouse1 "+smart_attack"

2)
  a) Just put the .pcx files into your .pak file with the highest number on it;
under the /pics directory within the .pak; with the actual .pak file in /baseq2
directory or the directory which you usually play (preferred).

  b) Or ALTERNATIVELY just give the included pak file the number of 9 instead of X,
rename your pak9.pak into a pakZ.pak where Z is the number not taken by
any other pak - do it all in the directory of the modification that you plan to use the
animated crosshairs with.

All done!

///ONLY IF IT DOES NOT WORK///
* Check to see if you've cut and pasted the lines coding the animation cycle into a .cfg
file that is normally executed when you start your game.
* If you use a firing button other than mouse1 (your left mouse button) then you will have
to replace every instance of "mouse1" with the proper Quake2 name of the key that you use
to fire.
* If you use more than one firing key and the animation only works for one of them you will
have to copy the 5 lines under "1)" of this document for each individual key and then replace
the "mouse1" in duplicate scripts with they keys' proper names.
* If you used a .pak file instead of adding the .pcx files to an existing one, then make
sure you have renamed it properly (as a pakX.pak, where X is the highest number from 0 to 9
in the directory that you want to use the crosshair with).
* Make sure you've placed everything in the directory that you are running. You can see
what directory you are playing by typing "game" at console.
* Generally there will be several instances of the files that can be used as crosshairs
and autoexec script files in Quake2 directory and its subdirectories. If all of the above
did not work for you, check and check again to see if nothing else gets executed on top or
instead of these crosshair files and script, overwriting them from the game engine or
just not trying to run them at all.
* If all else fails, and I mean only if all else fails, send a very detailed message at
the address below. I can not however provide any guarantees or promise to reply to
everyone, especially if the solution to your problem is outlined above. Having said that
thank you for trying out the ACHR.

Drop me a line if you thought of a better way to code the alias, or have it executed from
the inside of the .pak file.
